why all the sparrows...
The Ulm sparrow is a landmark of the city of Ulm.
The original stone "Ulm sparrow" from 1858 is on display in a display case in Ulm Minster.
A copper sparrow can still be found on the roof of the Minster today.
The story of the "Ulm Sparrow"
Many years ago,
The following happened to the people of Ulm:
For all kinds of construction in the city
you need lumber and timber,
But the people couldn't manage
to bring the beams through the gate,
And yet the matter had been carefully considered
The wood was laid across the wagon;
The gate was too narrow, the beams too long,
The city architect was afraid and worried.
There was a lot to talk about:
And a tremendous amount of headaches,
Yes, even the high magistrate
didn't know what to do in this case,
He looked in all the books,
The case hadn't been foreseen anywhere,
The mayor himself
was even at a loss here, for once.
For him, who knows everything best,
The matter was terribly heated.
And the embarrassment grew hour by hour.
Then - an incident occurred.
One of the cleverest saw a little sparrow,
building its nest up on the tower,
and a stalk that had laid itself across
in front of its nest,
with its little beak - and it was not stupid.
At the top it turned towards the nest.
"You could do the same," the man called out with a laugh,
"with the beam on the gate!"
They tried it and it worked. - The people of Ulm had the good thought to thank the sparrow:
They would probably still be standing at the gate today
with the wagon loaded with beams in front of it,
or, without the sparrow's knowledge,
would have had to sell the tower for demolition.
To thank the sparrow, you can still see his image carved in stone high up on the cathedral:
Even since then, for real Ulm children,
"Spätzle" has been their favorite dish.
Carl Hertzog, 1842
